Corner’s of the World

Corners of the World has a full history in Malaga Plaza. The current owner, Laurie Gifin, acquired the shop from the original owner in 2024 and maintained its charm and popular items as well as adding new items of her own. We refer to it as the most unique gift shop in the South Bay, which is a fitting description given the variety that we carry. An example of a unique item is our handmade Polish pottery (see attached photos for more information) – Laurie started carrying the line in the Spring and it has been very popular. One of our most popular items is our assortent of Emily Lex watercolor workbooks. People enjoy them as a hobby and and as a group activity. The shop carries gifts for all occaisions, greeting cards, baby and childrens games and toys, and home decor and accessories. Laurie is an established interior designer and has brought her sense of design and creativity to the shop.
Laurie’s email is [email protected] and the shop location is 1 Malaga Cove Plaza, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274. The shop phone number is 310-373-5096 and the instagram is @cornersoftheworldpv

A Toast to the Peninsula: Meet the Local Wine Visionaries
This holiday season, we raise a glass to the passion and artistry found right here on the Peninsula. From backyard vintners to boundary-pushing wine aficionados, our community is home to a trio of local wine lovers whose journeys are as diverse as the vintages they’ve crafted.
At the heart of it all is Jim York, whose pioneering efforts in cultivating grapes on the Palos Verdes Peninsula helped pave the way for its recognition as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA). Jim’s deep roots in the land and his dedication to local terroir have made him a cornerstone of the Peninsula’s wine story.
Joining him are Kenneth Johnson and Greg Becker, two devoted enthusiasts who call the Peninsula home. Though they didn’t grow the grapes themselves, their carefully curated wines reflect a shared passion for craftsmanship, community, and the joy of discovery—elements that bring people together, especially during the holiday season.
Whether grown here or gathered with intention, each bottle featured in this guide tells a story of love for the land, the craft, and the people who create and savor it. Cheers to homegrown spirit, inspired collaborations, and the unforgettable flavor of locally made memories.
Jim York, Vintner & Visionary

Jim York is the driving force behind Catalina View Gardens, a boutique vineyard rooted in the coastal terroir of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Known for his unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and place, Jim has helped transform a hidden South Bay hillside into one of California’s most compelling new wine stories.
Nestled just across from Terranea Resort, Jim’s five-acre vineyard produces award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Provençal-style rosé—crafted in partnership with veteran winemaker Ken Brown, a pioneer of California Pinot Noir. Together, they make wines that speak to the land: elegant, restrained, and shaped by the region’s cool ocean breezes and fog-kissed mornings.
Jim’s approach to wine is deeply personal. Harvests are small, averaging 600–700 cases per year, made from grapes grown on the Peninsula and crushed in Buellton. Every bottle is sold within the South Bay to local restaurants and markets, a true “farm-to-glass” operation that also includes avocados, citrus, heirloom tomatoes, and herbs grown on the same soil.
His pursuit of authenticity led him to champion the creation of the Palos Verdes Peninsula American Viticultural Area(AVA). In 2021, thanks in large part to Jim’s persistence, the region became only the second AVA in Los Angeles County—and California’s 142nd. It’s a designation that honors the Peninsula’s distinct climate, geology, and character. And it reflects Jim’s belief that this coastal plateau deserved recognition as a world-class winegrowing site.
A fourth-career vintner, Jim is a relentless steward of the land, a quiet visionary, and a local original. His wines don’t aim to conquer the world—just to reflect it. Specifically, this one breathtaking corner of it.

Kenneth Johnson – Author & Maverick Winemaker

Kenneth Johnson is both a poet and winemaker—two artistic paths intertwined by a shared quest for meaning and emotion. His journey into wine began with the written word. After publishing his book The Rose and the Silver Bell, he was inspired to bring his storytelling into a new form—one that could be tasted, savored, and shared in a different way.
As a maverick winemaker—a term used for those who produce fewer than 1,000 cases a year—Kenneth crafts wines from hand-selected grapes grown in renowned California vineyards. Based in Paso Robles, a hub for bold, expressive wines and forward-thinking vintners, he curates each bottle with intention and artistry. The Rose and the Silver Bell wine, like its literary counterpart, is a testament to love, craft, and the magic that unfolds when a story finds a new medium.
Echoing the evocative line from his book,
“That kiss will last for all of time,”
Kenneth’s wine invites you to experience poetry—one glass at a time.
