Where Costal Charm Meets Elevated Elegance Opens its Doors in Redondo Beach

Montauk Opens Its Doors, Offering an Exclusive Dining Experience Built on Music, Friendship, and Community

A new, sophisticated dining experience is emerging in Redondo Beach, blending the natural beauty of the Palos Verdes Peninsula with the vibrant spirit of the South Bay. At the heart of this exciting venture is Lavae McClinnahan, whose elevated vision for Montauk is set to infuse the area with a refreshing sense of coastal luxury. For Lavae, Montauk is not just a restaurant—it’s a personal vision brought to life, reflecting years of passion, perseverance, and a deep connection to the community he calls home.

“What drives me on the hardest days is the energy and excitement from the community. Hearing locals tell me they’re thrilled to have something fresh and elevated in the neighborhood – that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

Lavae McClinnahan’s journey to Montauk began long before he arrived in Redondo Beach. Raised in a military family, he lived across the country, developing resilience and a global perspective that would later shape both his personal life and business ventures. his mother, a high-ranking Army veteran, instilled in him qualities like discipline and adaptability, which continue to serve him well as an entrepreneur. Though originally from Washington, D.C., Lavae’s love for coastal living led him to the South Bay more than 15 years ago. Residing in Rancho Palos Verdes, he was drawn by the area’s sweeping coastal views, peaceful atmosphere, and sense of spaciousness—luxuries rarely found in Southern California. But what truly anchored him here was the supportive, vibrant community, which inspired him to slow down, connect, and appreciate life. his weekends reflect the Peninsula’s fulfilling lifestyle—morning walks along trails, exploring local hidden gems like the Great American Seafood Market and Pho Hana, and spinning jazz vinyl at home. A former DJ, Lavae still brings his creative passion to private events, keeping alive a love for music that started during his days on the Interscope Records street team.

His story, both personal and professional, comes full circle with Montauk—a venture that combines his love for natural beauty, luxury branding, and community. Prior to launching Montauk, Lavae spent years building his expertise in high-end marketing, working with prestigious brands like Ralph Lauren and Sony. his time at these companies helped him develop a keen eye for luxury branding and a powerful network of influential connections. After moving to Los Angeles in the early 2000s, Lavae immersed himself in fine dining, learning the intricacies of wine pairings and multi-course meals. This blend of luxury marketing and culinary passion has shaped the concept of Montauk, infusing the restaurant with a unique, elevated yet approachable spirit.

Montauk’s journey to opening was made possible through the mentorship and support of several key South Bay figures. Restaurateurs Mike and Chris Simms of the Simms Group provided invaluable guidance on hospitality, while David Slay offered hands-on advice during the early stages of development. Financial expertise from Larry Johnson at El Camino College’s SBDC also helped Lavae navigate the complexities of launching a high-end dining concept. Leading the culinary experience is Executive Chef Alex Schwartzman, whose sophisticated and inspired menu will offer a refreshing alternative to the South Bay’s more casual dining landscape. Working closely alongside him is General Manager Lindsay Shelton, whose leadership ensures that every guest experience at Montauk is warm and memorable. Together, they bring a shared commitment to elevated hospitality, supported by a sommelier-curated wine list and an exclusive after-hours lounge that promises to add a new, intimate dimension to Redondo Beach’s nightlife.

Montauk is more than just a dining destination—it’s a vital part of the community. Lavae McClinnahan’s vision extends beyond the table, aiming to create a space that celebrates connection, creativity, and local culture. By sourcing regional ingredients, highlighting local artists and musicians, and partnering with schools and charitable organizations, Montauk will soon become a hub for both refined dining and community involvement. Designed to capture the perfect blend of coastal charm and luxury, it offers a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere, where guests can savor both gourmet meals and meaningful moments. For Lavae, Montauk represents the culmination of his journey from East Coast beginnings to South Bay roots, crafted with soul, purpose, and a deep love for the place he now calls home.

Anchored in Elegance and Design

From the moment guests enter Montauk, they are immersed in a space where every detail—from the materials to the atmosphere—has been meticulously curated to deliver an experience that is both inviting and luxurious. The transformation began with a simple question: what could this space become? Working alongside renowned designer Leticia Moody of Moody Design Group, who is behind the aesthetics of many Gordon Ramsay restaurants, Lavae envisioned a restaurant that offers not just style but an entire lifestyle experience. Drawing inspiration from his admiration for Ralph Lauren, Lavae sought to blend sophistication with comfort, resulting in a space that feels more like a beautifully appointed home than a typical restaurant— warm, intimate, and elegant. Subtle nods to Montauk’s heritage and Indigenous culture are woven into the design through elements like brown leathers, warm lighting, and linen- shaded lamps, giving the space a timeless, grounded feel.

“We didn’t just want it to look good—we wanted it to feel good,” Lavae shares. “From the greeting to the presentation of food and wine, every touchpoint is designed to make guests feel at home.” Notable features include luxury materials like navy corduroy wallpaper by Philip Jeffries, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also improves acoustics, creating a serene and comfortable dining experience. Custom beadboard sourced from North Carolina and strategic soundproofing further elevate the sensory journey.

The space itself underwent a complete renovation, stripping away years of past layers to build something fresh and purposeful. The outdoor patio area seamlessly connects with the interior, enhancing the overall flow. Montauk is thoughtfully divided into multiple spaces, including an intimate jazz lounge, offering guests a range of experiences. Whether enjoying a cozy dinner, celebrating a special occasion, or relaxing to live music, Montauk’s heart, precision, and commitment to exceptional hospitality are evident in every corner.

Blending coastal chic elegance with high- end culinary sophistication, Montauk invites guests to linger, connect, and return time and again. It is a space built with soul, designed to become a cherished part of the South Bay for years to come.
