Partners for Pediatric Vision’s Beary Special Build-A-Bear Experience for Children with Vision Loss

The store opened early allowing for a quieter experience that is less overwhelming for our children with visual impairment. Families had time to meet one another, snap photos, and share smiles as they celebrated their new furry friends.

On October 12, 2025, 15 children with permanent vision loss and their families, who receive services from Partners for Pediatric Vision, had the opportunity to create their very own stuffed bear buddy during the much anticipated annual Build-A-Bear event at the Del Amo Fashion Center. Volunteers from Junior Vistas, the children’s philanthropy affiliated with Vistas for Children, Inc. and the National Charity League, Peninsula Chapter (NCL) helped make the experience special as they guided every child and family through the stations. From stuffing, washing, dressing and naming their bears, the volunteers provided support and described each experience. The children couldn’t wait to pick out clothing and accessories for their new furry friends! Each bear became a reflection of their personalities. The children also received glasses for their bears, thanks to PPV’s Parent Support Group Facilitator, Janice Goldhaber, MFT. PPV’s Family Specialist, Heather Dawson, made canes for the bears, adding a special touch. PPV is grateful to Vistas for Children, Inc. for sponsoring this meaningful experience. 

Each bear received a birth certificate, a pair of mini glasses donated by PPV’s Parent Support Group Facilitator, Janice Goldhaber, MFT, and a tiny white cane handcrafted by PPV’s Family Specialist, Heather Dawson. These heartfelt touches made each bear as unique as its creator.
