Malaga Cove Gift Shop Owner Jürgen Käding

After more than 30 years on the Peninsula, Malaga Cove gift shop owner, Jürgen Käding is bidding adieu to Palos Verdes and saying Bonjour to a farmhouse located in a little French village near the Pyrenees mountains.

“It’s beautiful where I am moving. My property has views of sunflower fields its the Tuscany of France. Ihavea 200-year-old farmhouse and over three acres. There is no traffic, it is a perfect location,” says Käding.

Looking for a quieter life and ready to retire, the German-born proprietor of Corners of the World gift shop, who has traveled the world over and lived in six countries, says he loves his loyal customers and shopping for the unique one of a kind gifts the store offers. “I select items with great care and I love shopping. It gives me great joy. That I will miss a lot,” he says.

Käding loves beautiful things and curating Corners of the World for the last 31 years has been his dream job. He plans to remain open until summer of 2024 when he will hang up his shopkeeper’s hat and put on his innkeeper’s hat. “In France I am going to open a bed and breakfast. It will be wonderful. I am not going to sit around but it will be quieter. I will putter in the garden and can manage my work how I please.”

Along with the stunningly unique selection of gifts including one of a kind home decor, books and cards Käding’s colorful and delightful presence, his eye for refinement and beauty and his deep ongoing relationships with his customers will create a void in Malaga Cove. “I am going to miss this place and this community. I love my customers. I have seen many of them come in with their children over the years and now those children have children.”

Käding hopes to sell his successful business, a deal that is predicated on working out an equitable arrangement with his landlord. For now Corners of the World is filled with a delightful assortment of gifts from across the globe and the warm glow of the holidays fills the store and beckons customers.
