SUMMARY:Patrick Landeza & Sons Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar
DESCRIPTION:Hot off the heels of his historic second Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award win (Hawaiian GRAMMY)\, Patrick Landeza heads to The Annex with his new musical creation Patrick Landeza & Sons. The group includes prodigy Justin Firmeza on Hawaiian steel guitar and keyboard along with Patrick Landeza\, Jr or “PJ” on bass guitar. Come celebrate an evening of Hawaiian music\, hula and aloha!\n\n\nAbout Patrick Landeza & Sons\n\n\nA native Hawaiian who was born and raised on the continent\, Patrick Landeza found his roots in the music shared with him by his mother\, Frances Kawaipūloʻu Kuakini OʻSullivan Landeza. The songs that she taught him\, many of which are on this new release\, were songs that she learned growing up in Hoʻolehua\, Molokaʻi. The music filled cultural gaps left by his childhood in California\, providing him with a firm foundation upon which he built his musical career. The music he grew up listening to sparked an interest in the traditional art of slack-key\, connecting Patrick with some of kī hōʻalu’s most legendary names: Cyril Pahinui\, Raymond Kāne\, George Kuo\, and Dennis Kamakahi. Under their tutelage\, the network of roots that his mother had carefully established grew and Patrick’s style of music became firmly rooted in slack-key.\n\n\nNow a father of 5\, it’s Landeza’s turn to follow in his mother’s footsteps and share the songs of his heritage with the next generation\, connecting them to their ancestors through the very roots that connected him. Patrick Landeza & Sons are made up of Patrick\, his son\, Patrick Landeza\, Jr. or PJ (17)\, and his hānai son\, Justin Firmeza (19). PJ is currently an 11th grader at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward and Justin is in his 3rd year at San Jose State University majoring in Jazz Studies.\n\n \n\n\nBy teaching these young men the songs he was taught\, Patrick is ensuring that the legacy that he was entrusted with by his mother and many slack-key mentors will live on. He has assembled some of his favorites in this CD offering\, Back to the Roots\, a collection that celebrates his commitment to root a new generation of musicians in the same traditions that were instilled in him. Hawaiian music is dynamic\, changing\, and evolving with the world around us. But through this creative process\, we must never lose sight of our roots\, those ties that bind us to the foundation so carefully laid by those that came before us.\n\n\nThis concert was originally scheduled for 10/15/2022 all tickets purchased for the original date have been exchanged and will be valid for the new date of 5/20/2023. Thank you for your understanding.\n\n\nPre-concert Slack Key Guitar Workshop at 7PM\n\n\nSlack and Steel: Hawaiian Steel and Slack Key Guitar Clinic w/ Justin Firmeza and Patrick LandezaJustin and Patrick demonstrate the dynamics of these two unique Hawaiian styles of playing. This will be both a hands on and wala`au (discussion) session so feel free to bring an instrument.\n\n\nJustin Firmeza is one of the young up and coming steel players. A student of steel master Alan Akaka\, his ability to incorporate the different traditional Hawaiian styles of playing with modern licks shows his versatility. His unique style blends jazz\, western swing along with sacred steel. Justin is currently a jazz major at San Jose State University and teaches music part time at Moreau Catholic High School.\n\n\nPatrick Landeza is a two time Na Hoku Hanohano award winner. He was mentored by Hawaiian Slack Key Legends Cyril Pahinui\, Dennis Kamakahi and Ray Kane.\n\n\nConcert at 8:30PM\n\n\nTickets $23-33 a person and include workshop.

SUMMARY:Small Glories & Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Roots powerhouse duo Cara Luft (The Wailin’ Jennys) and JD Edwards\, are a musical tour-de-force partnership planted on the Canadian Prairies. Winners of the 2019 International Folk Music Awards Artist of the Year and Canadian Folk Music Awards Contemporary Album of the Year in 2020. They bring a folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love\, loss\, and environment\, delivered with soaring\, interwoven vocals on various combinations of stomping clawhammer banjo\, guitar and harmonica.\n\n\nThrown together purely by accident for an anniversary show at Winnipeg’s venerable West End Cultural Centre\, The Small Glories could almost make you believe in fate. With a stage banter striking a unique balance between slapstick and sermon\, these veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear\, rooms shrink\, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writing the songs\, living the songs\, performing the songs.\n\n\nPre-Concert Wine Tastings: 7-7:30PM\, led by JP Molinari and require an additional ticket. Wine tastings are $16 or free for members at the Friend\, Committee of $200\, VIP Circle\, Premium\, and Angel levels.\n\n\nJean Philippe (JP) Molinari will be presenting a selection of fine wines. JP’s career in the wine business began in France. Here in the U.S.\, he honed his skills and love of wine to become a sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers. You’ll enjoy both his expertise and charm.\n\n \n\n\nTickets $20-30 a person\, wine tasting additional.

DESCRIPTION:We believe in creating unique opportunities for people to meet their neighbors and engage in their community in a new way. Come play with us!\n\n\nTaiko is a Japanese traditional drumming practice that\, over the last several decades\, has become a global phenomenon. Since 2013\, Grand Vision has partnered with leading taiko instructors to bring the art form to the South Bay.\n\n\nTaiko Artist Man Man Mui guides participants toward a repertoire of drumming techniques and patterns. Sessions include developing rhythmic sensibility\, body awareness\, breath and strength training as students make music together as a team.\n\n\nTeam Taiko is open to all skill levels and abilities\, from beginners to seasoned musicians\, and fees are on a sliding scale. Recommended for ages 12 and up\, children must participate with a guardian or have a signed participation waiver.\n\n \n\n\nClasses are offered in person and streamed live via Zoom to allow for all to participate.
