VEFA Gallery, established by the Anderson family, has quickly emerged as a dynamic force in the South Bay’s art scene. Rooted in the Palos Verdes community, the Andersons bring a deep appreciation for local culture and a global perspective to their gallery. Their passion for fostering creativity and connection is evident in every aspect of VEFA’s design and programming, which aims to unite diverse artists around today’s most relevant topics.
At the heart of VEFA Gallery’s success is Delia Cabral, its Senior Advisor and Lead Curator. With over two decades of experience as a curator, art writer, and strategic advisor, Cabral has shaped the gallery into a platform for artistic innovation and community engagement. Her global expertise and thoughtful approach drive VEFA’s inclusive and educational programming, which resonates with both casual visitors and seasoned collectors alike.
Recently, we sat down with Delia Cabral to explore the vision behind VEFA Gallery. Her insights reveal the thoughtful and ambitious goals that make this gallery an inspiring cultural hub in the South Bay.
Q: Can you share how your involvement with VEFA Gallery began?
Delia Cabral: It all started with a suggestion from my lawyer, Michael, to join a Zoom call with an LA based family who was looking to open an art gallery in The South Bay. I initially agreed to offer advice and point them in the right direction, as I often do. But as we spoke, I realized there were so many synergies between us—our families, our experiences, even shared moments at Rat Beach. It was as though the universe was pushing us together. Since then, we’ve grown into an extended family, working relentlessly and passionately to build something extraordinary.
Q: How do you balance your international work and your role at VEFA Gallery?
Delia Cabral: It’s a 24/7 commitment. I split my time between the UK and Los Angeles, leveraging my international contacts to bring opportunities here. I’m also pursuing another master’s degree in curation and ceramics in the UK, so my days are packed with studies, art theory, Zoom meetings, and gallery work. I love this dynamic life—it allows me to stay connected globally while nurturing the gallery locally.
Q: What has the response to the VEFA Gallery been like so far?
Delia Cabral: It’s been overwhelming in the best way. We had 600 people show up to our opening, and the demand has exceeded all expectations. Collectors, museums, and even my old contacts from the art world have been blown away by what we’ve accomplished. The gallery itself is a work of art, and it’s thrilling to see how it resonates with everyone who visits.
Q: Can you tell us about your approach to creating the gallery experience?
Delia Cabral: The gallery isn’t just a venue for showcasing art—it’s a masterpiece in its own right. Every detail, from the thoughtfully curated educational programs to the immersive exhibits, reflects a commitment to innovation and storytelling. With a nod to art history, we delve into bold contemporary themes, like the interplay between digital consciousness, AI, and surrealism. It’s about redefining boundaries and crafting an experience that lingers in the memory.
Q: How do collaborations play a role in the gallery’s success?
Delia Cabral: Collaboration is key. We’ve spent years building relationships with organizations, artists, and collectors, and now we’re bringing them into the gallery. These connections enrich our exhibitions and events, creating a vibrant community around the gallery. It’s a team effort, from the curatorial work to the support from family and friends.
Q: What’s next for VEFA Gallery?
Delia Cabral: We have big plans! I’m exploring the possibility of bringing some of our exhibitions to London, continuing to expand our international network. Locally, we’re diving into ambitious projects, including surrealism-inspired exhibitions tied to the centennial of the Surrealist Manifesto. We’re also exploring how art intersects with modern realities like NFTs and AI. The future is bright, and I’m excited to see how the gallery evolves.
Q: What makes VEFA Gallery stand out in the South Bay?
Delia Cabral: VEFA Gallery has transformed what used to be an art desert into an oasis. We’ve brought a level of artistry and innovation that’s rare, not just in the South Bay but even in Los Angeles. The gallery draws visitors from all over, including major museums and collectors. It’s become a cultural hub, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve created.
Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring curators or gallery owners?
Delia Cabral: Follow your passion but know that it takes relentless hard work. Be open to collaboration and never stop learning. In the art world, you don’t have to be everything for everyone, but always aim to guide people along their path. It’s about creating opportunities and connections that elevate art and its impact on the world.
