The Historic and Beautiful Portuguese Bend

In light of recent developments concerning the land movement in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, PV Magazine would like to honor the residents and celebrate the beauty of the Portuguese Bend community. On Monday July 29, SoCalGas indefinitely cut service to 135 homes in this area. The accelerated land movement is unprecedented, and we extend our best wishes to our fellow community members in the area.

Wayfarers Chapel, a National Historic Landmark designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. (Lloyd Wright), closed to the public on February 15, 2024, due to accelerated land movement in the Rancho Palos Verdes area. To prevent further irreparable damage to the chapel’s structure and materials, it was determined that immediate deconstruction was the safest and most viable preservation action. The chapel is being carefully disassembled, with each piece catalogued and documented. Efforts are being made to preserve as much of the original materials as practicable, and all components are being relocated to a temporary safe location until they can be reassembled.

On June 26, 2024 According to Wayfares Chapel,”the chapel disassembly is near completion with the redwood bents removed. Additional historic elements of the chapel will carefully be disassembled in the coming weeks. The Wayfarers community is committed to preserving the historic chapel and giving it a resilient future.”
