Teen Hero Brings Lifesaving CPR Skills to Palos Verdes High School

Student wants classmates to learn the skill that saved his dad’s life.

WHAT: On Tuesday, January 21, students at Palos Verdes High School will be participating in a special event instead of attending their regular classes. They will join the American Heart Association to learn the lifesaving skill of Hands-Only CPR. This event is organized by Ryder Elkin, a student whose quick thinking and CPR skills helped save his father’s life during a cardiac arrest at home last year. Ryder is determined to ensure that his classmates are equipped with the same knowledge that made a critical difference for his family.

WHO: Student Ryder Elkin and family, Palos Verdes High School students and teachers, and the American Heart Association

WHEN: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025: Learning Session 1 is at 12-12:45pm, and Learning Session 2 is at 1:15-2pm

WHERE: Palos Verdes High School, 600 Cloyden Rd, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274

MORE: Every year, more than 350,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital – and 90% do not survive. Only about 41% of people who experience cardiac arrest receive CPR from people nearby while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

The American Heart Association has set a goal to double the cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030 by increasing the number of people who respond to cardiac arrest by calling 911, delivering high-quality CPR and getting and using an AED as soon as it is available. Learn more at heart.org/Nation.
