PV Pets: Koa and Maverick

Meet Maverick and Koa, the Shikiya Family’s beloved fur boys. Steve and Sharon Shikiya, empty nesters, have filled their Palos Verdes home with love, laughter, and the delightful company of their two beloved dogs, Maverick and Koa. As Steve and Sharon put it, they “can’t imagine life without their fur babies,” and it’s easy to see why.

These two dogs-our PV Pets of the month-bring a unique blend of personality and joy into the Shikiya household, making every day brighter and full of surprises.

Maverick (Bichon-Poodle):The Little Firecracker with a Cat-Like Personality

Twelve years ago, Sharon attended a Vistas meeting and spotted Maverick, an 8-week-old Bichon-Poodle mix with an undeniable charm. It was love at first sight. The Shikiyas took him home, and since then, Maverick has made his mark as the household’s “little firecracker.” Despite being small in size, his personality is anything but!

With a personality that combines the independence of a cat with a dog’s love for companionship, Maverick brings an intriguing dynamic to the home. He enjoys his alone time, often grooming himself with the precision of a feline. But Maverick is also incredibly affectionate, always coming around when you least expect it for a cuddle or some quiet moments together. His quirky blend of independence and warmth has endeared him deeply to Steve and Sharon, making him their steadfast companion through the years.

Koa (Golden Retriever): The Big Cuddle Bug with a Heart of Gold

Four-year-old Koa entered the Shikiya family in a rather unusual way. After several unsuccessful attempts to adopt a dog from a Golden Retriever rescue center, Steve and Sharon sought out a service dog training center in San Diego. Koa, a Golden Retriever, had been training as a service dog but didn’t quite make the cut at four months, a twist of fate that the Shikiyas consider their luckiest break. Since joining the family, Koa has proven himself to be a gentle giant, weighing in at a hefty 70 pounds yet convinced he’s a lap dog! His heart is as big as his size, and his love for people, especially children, knows no bounds. In fact, Koa is currently in training to become a certified therapy dog.
