Meet Prince!

Prince is a much-loved pony from the Portuguese Bend community. Prince’s owner, Nora Hassas, and her children Ava and Luca, ages 7 and 6, took the time to share about their PV Pet. They have had Prince for a year and a half and Nora says Prince is thoughtful, and incredibly sensitive to whoever is riding him. If a rider is off balance, he knows and will stop. She says ponies have a reputation for being naughty, but Prince has been the perfect pony for beginners. It is clear from talking with Nora that she is an animal lover; in addition to Prince the Hassas family also has six dogs as well as chickens.

Where and why did you get your pet?

We were part of the Pony Club but did not have our own horse. Our entire family is petite, and my child was six at the time, so I wanted a small horse. One that she could learn on and not be scared. A former trainer helped us find Prince through a friend.

What does your pony eat and are there any favorite treats he enjoys?

Prince does not really get treats; I am scared to give him too much sugar. He loves apples and carrots and healthy foods. Just like for the kids, the pony also gets healthy food.

What is the best part of having a pony?

In addition to learning to ride, it is a learning opportunity. The kids learn how much responsibility it is to take care of a horse. Some days you do not feel like cleaning after them, but it has to be done. One day everything is fun, the next day you may get bucked off during lesson. Through the ups and downs, the kids form a bond with the animal.

I asked the kids what they liked best about their pony. Ava’s favorite thing about Prince is “that he is so calm”, while Luca says he likes that he “likes me so much”.

Do you have any advice for families considering getting a pony?

Anyone considering getting a pony should ask themselves “why do you want to get a pony?” Think about if you will outgrow the pony and need to change to a larger horse later. You should think hard because you develop a bond with the animal. Also, in addition to the cost, consider that a pony needs attention, so you need free time and to be willing to spend your free time at the barn.
