Whether you are a long time Palos Verdes resident and are familiar with the Marine Mammal Care Center or are new to the area and don’t know yet about this organization, we are excited to share this remarkable center with you.

Located at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, the Marine Mammal Care Center has treated and helped rehabilitate more than 8,000 marine mammal patients. The MMCC facility serves all Los Angeles county beaches where they provide care to injured, sick or malnourished sea lions stranded on the 70+ miles of beach from Malibu to Seal Beach; with the goal to rehabilitate and release them back to their ocean habitat. MMCC has provided top-notch care for marine mammals in need since 1992, with the goal of rehabilitating and releasing them back to their ocean home. In addition to providing treatment for LA County’s stranded marine mammals, MMCC has a multi-faceted educational program for students, teachers, and the general public about marine science and the animals cared for at our facility. MMCC works to increase public awareness on various environmental issues and the importance of ocean conservation through outreach activities and educational tours. MMCC also collaborates with scientists from around the country to conduct non-invasive research.

The four major current fashion capitals are acknowledged to be Paris, Milan, New York City, and London, which are all headquarters to the greatest fashion companies and are renowned for their major influence on global fashion. Fashion weeks are held in these cities, where designers exhibit their new clothing collections to audiences.

Quick History

1978
Marineland of the Pacific opened its Marine Mammal Care Center and incorporated a docent program, Organization for the Respect and Care of Animals of the Sea (ORCAS). In 1980, ORCAS was sponsored by Union Oil Company.

1987
Marineland closed; arrangements were made to build and to open Marine Mammal Care Center in Angels Gate Park in San Pedro across from Fort MacArthur. This was a collaboration with the purchaser of the Marineland property and Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

1991
Between the time Marineland closed and construction of the current site of MMCC LA, care was still provided for stranded animals. ORCAS operated a first-aid station at Dockweiler Beach; in 1991 it moved to a converted horse trailer at the former Marineland site and the more serious cases were transported to Sea World’s rehabilitation center in San Diego.

1992
Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort McArthur officially opened on October 1st, 1992 and was managed by the Foundation for Marine Animal Husbandry, a Florida 501(c)(3) organization.

2016
On September 1, 2016 the new nonprofit organization assumed responsibility for this vital hospital.
