Pick your show Stopper
You need a starting point. Pick one tile that you love and don’t be afraid to take a risk with a fun pattern. It can be the accent tile or a classic subway tile. Whatever you have envisioned consider this as your base point. If you haven’t given it much thought, we always recommend saving pictures that appeal to you and you will start to recognize a theme. Pinterest is a great place to start.
Think about Scale – larger format tile typically makes the space feel more expensive. There will be less grout lines and less maintenance. Smaller spaces such as powder rooms can lend itself to a smaller format tile. We recommend keeping no more than 3 different tiles in a given space and they should have complementary color palettes.
Consider the maintenance – Porcelain and ceramic tiles do not require much upkeep. Natural stone tile requires sealants because they are porous. Light colored grout can look dirty if used on the floor. High-gloss tiles are notorious for showing watermarks, grease and fingerprints, so you will find yourself cleaning them more frequently.
Design Tip: Highly polished tile such as glass or marble increases the risk of slipping in wet areas. Avoid highly polished flooring in bathrooms, mudrooms, and pool area.
