Generations of Art: A Mother-Daughter Journey

Art flourishes and thrives in the coastal haven of Palos Verdes, nestled in unexpected corners, awaiting discovery with each passing day.

Jeanne Zaske’s artistry flourishes amidst the breathtaking natural landscapes that inspire her vibrant paintings. This profound connection to the beauty of her surroundings has been ingrained in her daughter, Lynnie, from a young age, shaping her own artistic journey amidst the scenic vistas of Palos Verdes.

Now residing in Redondo Beach, Lynnie Sterba, who is also a therapist, continues to draw inspiration from her upbringing, regularly attending art classes at the Palos Verdes Art Center, where both she and her mother are active members of various artist groups. Their connection to the center runs deep, having exhibited their artworks in its prestigious gallery on numerous occasions.

Jeanne’s reputation as a respected artist in Palos Verdes precedes her, with a dedicated following of collectors who cherish her evocative creations.  Similarly, Lynnie has cultivated her own admirers, drawn to her unique perspective and artistic flair.

“I can’t remember when I wasn’t doing some kind of drawing or painting,” says Lynnie.

Together, mother and daughter have explored the profound influence of nature on their work, infusing their paintings with the essence of Palos Verdes’ breathtaking landscapes.

Their artistic journey has been documented in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Artists book by Stephen Smoke, a testament to their contributions to the local art scene. For Lynnie, art has been a lifelong passion and deep love but, “It wasn’t until 2004, with my first group show, that I began to take art seriously,” she says.

Since then, she and her mother have collaborated on two successful mother-daughter exhibitions in 2005 and 2012.

Now, they’re preparing for their latest endeavor—a joint showcase titled “Art That Inspires” at the Malaga Cove Library Gallery. Scheduled for May 1 to May 31, 2024, with a reception on May 4, this exhibition promises to be a celebration of creativity and familial support. Their commitment to making a difference through art and their belief in its healing power shine through in every brushstroke.

As visitors peruse the gallery, they’ll witness the symbiotic relationship between Jeanne and Lynnie’s artistry. Despite their distinct styles, there’s a tangible connection that speaks to their shared experiences and influences. From vibrant color palettes to recurring motifs, their works resonate with joy, beauty, and inspiration, uplifting all who encounter them.Above all, the exhibition is a testament to the bond between mother and daughter, nurtured by a mutual passion for art. Jeanne’s unwavering support has provided a foundation for Lynnie to flourish, while Lynnie’s fresh perspective breathes new life into their collaborative efforts. Together, they invite viewers to immerse themselves in a world where art transcends generations, forging connections that resonate long after the exhibition’s conclusion.
