In the dynamic realm of entrepreneurship, April Showers emerges as a unique and steadfast force, turning dreams into reality with her Afro Unicorn brand. This Palos Verdes resident has made history by becoming the first black-woman-owned brand to secure a full license for a character brand in major retail stores. In less than two years, April has transformed Afro Unicorn into a global phenomenon, with products gracing the shelves of Walmart, Target, JCPenney, Kohl’s, and Amazon. This is the inspiring story of a woman who blends creativity, determination, execution and a touch of magic to realize her dreams.
Meeting April Showers at her Rancho Palos Verdes home, we were privileged to learn more about the woman behind the groundbreaking Afro Unicorn brand. Just before her appearance on CBS Mornings with Gayle King, where she discussed her Afro Unicorn Little Golden Book Series deal with Random House Publishing, April shared insights into her journey.
April attributes her success to her supportive upbringing, citing her loving parents who instilled in her a strong work ethic and a kind, Christian background. Despite growing up in South Central Los Angeles, her mother ensured she explored diversely different areas of Los Angeles which ultimately fostered a drive for success and a different lifestyle. April, a high-energy executor, previously managed a real estate and insurance business and still owns a Farmers Insurance office in Long Beach. Her dedication to supporting long-time employees still at her office in Long Beach showcases her generosity and genuine character.
The Birth of Afro Unicorn
The genesis of Afro Unicorn is as enchanting as the brand itself. April was repeatedly dubbed
a “unicorn” by friends due to her exceptional ability to juggle multiple aspects of life. Embracing this nickname, she made a decision to explore the concept of unicorns as magical and unique beings. She hired an illustrator to create an image that truly represented and looked like her, unknowingly giving birth to the Afro Unicorn brand.
April’s belief in manifestation played a crucial role in Afro Unicorn’s journey to major retailers. The brand now spans over 25 categories, including apparel, accessories, toys, puzzles, books, bedding, backpacks, and more. With 45-plus licensee partners worldwide, April empowers entrepreneurs to manifest their dreams.
Positive Mission
Afro Unicorn isn’t just a brand; it’s a conscious movement with a clear mission. April is committed to uplifting and positively impacting women entrepreneurs. Beyond speaking engagements, her brand continues to be a movement with a social impact with the launch of the Afro Unicorn Foundation, led by extraordinary Executive Director, Kenyelle Ash. The Afro Unicorn Foundation is designed to make a direct impact on young girls by helping them to discover and uncover what makes them unique, divine and magical by nurturing them to become confident leaders of tomorrow. Afro Unicorn’s dedication to normalizing black beauty resonates with messages from mothers expressing how the brand has empowered their daughters to embrace their natural hair and be proud of it.
April’s ability to visualize success, sets her apart. She practices daily gratitude, writing down ten things she’s thankful for each morning, along with daily goals. Afro Unicorn has not only become a recognized brand but also found a place in major retailers, a testament to April’s determination and ability to efficiently execute an idea into reality.
The Palos Verdes Experience
Although she has only lived in Palos Verdes for a little over three years, April feels a strong connection to the area. She has created a beautiful home on the Peninsula through hard work and focused determination. Her love for Palos Verdes is evident in her vivid and enthusiastic descriptions of its breathtaking views, serene landscapes, and lush greenery. She shares that the area serves as a haven for her to find inspiration and continue manifesting more of her dreams.
She happily landed in Rancho Palos Verdes with her two sons after having visited the area for a wedding and experiencing its beauty and serenity. Now, she resides on a horse-themed-named street, which synchronistically aligns with the connection she has always felt towards horses…and now, unicorns! April credits her love for open spaces to summer visits to Louisiana as she was growing up.
Looking Ahead
For this motivated entrepreneur, it seems she will continue to use Palos Verdes as a sanctuary to peacefully recharge. April is currently pitching an animated series and an entrepreneurial game show, fostering young girls as they develop their businesses. When we asked her about the future and what she currently has in the manifestation queue, she smiled and quickly responded that she planned on being on Oprah’s Super Soul and one day having a theme park!
While the success of April Showers and Afro Unicorn may seem like a result of manifestation, magic, and luck, after meeting this very disciplined, and intelligent woman, we know it’s much more. This is a story of lots of hard work, determination, and an unwavering belief in the power of focused visualization. That is what has propelled Afro Unicorn to the forefront of the global entrepreneurial landscape. We can’t wait to see what the upcoming years bring for this motivated entrepreneur, as we know this is just the tip of the iceberg!
