Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi: A Devoted Advocate for Palos Verdes

Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi is a dedicated public servant with a heartfelt connection to the Palos Verdes community he proudly calls home. In a recent interview with Palos Verdes Magazine, Muratsuchi shared insights into his life, his deep love for the community, and the tireless dedication he brings to representing Palos Verdes.

A Love for Palos Verdes

For nearly 30 years, Muratsuchi has been an integral part of the South Bay, beginning his journey in Torrance after graduating from UC Berkeley and UCLA. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that he, his wife Hiroko, their daughter Keiko, and their rescue dog Teddy decided to make Palos Verdes their home. Muratsuchi expressed his gratitude for the privilege of living in one of California’s most beautiful communities.

Despite the demands of his role as a State Assembly member, Muratsuchi seamlessly balances his duties with a weekly commute to Sacramento. Every Monday, he leaves his Rolling Hills Estates home and returns every Thursday evening. This weekly routine, made possible by Southwest Airlines, underscores his commitment to both his legislative responsibilities and his family and home.

Public Education as a Passion

Throughout his public service, Muratsuchi’s dedication to public education is evident. As a parent, former Torrance School Board President, and current Chair of the Education Committee in the State Assembly, he has consistently championed public education. Muratsuchi shared that his daughter Keiko is a student at Peninsula High School, having previously attended Cornerstone Elementary and Ridgecrest Intermediate, reflecting his personal investment in the local neighborhood schools.

Advocating for School Funding and Addressing Critical Needs

A cornerstone of Muratsuchi’s work is advocating for increased funding for all schools, including Palos Verdes schools. He understands the unique challenges faced by affluent communities that receive less state funding per student. During his ten years of service, he has not only delivered increased state funding but also authored and helped pass Proposition 2, a $10 billion statewide school bond, as well as Palos Verdes school bond Measure SOS, to repair and upgrade our aging schools and address urgent school facility safety conditions.

In 2022, at a pivotal town hall meeting organized by the Palos Verdes Council of PTAs, Muratsuchi engaged with local high school students who complained about dilapidated bathrooms at Peninsula High School and Palos Verdes High School. Responding swiftly, he successfully secured $500,000 in state funds for bathroom renovations. This interaction highlights Muratsuchi’s commitment to listen and take decisive action in response to community concerns.

Family Traditions and Love for the Ocean

Outside public service, Muratsuchi’s love for the ocean reflects his diverse background. Born in Okinawa, Japan, where his father served as a United States Army civilian, Muratsuchi spent his childhood swimming in the ocean and surfing. In 2018, he introduced and passed a bill declaring surfing as California’s official sport, celebrating the history and heritage of California’s coastal communities like Palos Verdes.

The Challenges of Public Service

Navigating the complexities of public service during divisive times is no easy feat, yet Muratsuchi maintains a positive outlook. He acknowledges differing opinions while remaining resolute in his efforts to represent Palos Verdes and the South Bay. While he recognizes the personal sacrifices his public service requires, particularly for his wife and family, he is steadfast in his belief in the importance of community service.

A Legacy of Love and Dedication

Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi’s story is one of love, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Palos Verdes. From his advocacy for public education to securing funding and addressing critical infrastructure needs, Muratsuchi is a true champion for the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the South Bay. As he continues to navigate politics and public service, his love for the Palos Verdes community is his guiding force, making him an invaluable advocate for the community where he and his family calls home.
