In November 2020 PV Magazine announced the first-ever student photography contest. The theme was "At Home on the Peninsula". We published our list of rules which included a required narrative to be submitted with the photo.
We invited all the high schools on The Peninsula to participate and received over 125 submissions. The photos were amazing and the interpretation of the theme was different for everyone. Although it was an incredibly difficult decision, Erik Jay with the PVMagazine Team chose the top three winners as well as 17 Honorable Mentions that were honored for different reasons.
We would like to thank everyone who submitted a photo.
“I was honored to be part of PV Magazine’s first student photography contest and was amazed at the number of entries and variations of photography. I saw artistic genius, heart, soul and creative thought. This community is filled with amazing young minds that are full of expression and reveal an early culmination of artistic spirit. This reminds me how important it is we keep this avenue of expression through art open to our youth. As a lifelong local I know that this is what PV was originally built on; this is what PV is still about.”
Congratulations to Mr. Stiles, Peninsula High School Photography teacher, who had 15 students win out of the 20 winners!
James Stiles was a full-time photographer working with advertising agencies shooting fashion, portraits and products in New York City for over 20 years. He has a BFA in Art & Photography from The School of Visual Arts, NYC and taught photo at Otis College of Art & Design in LA for 5 years before arriving at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School, 13 years ago, which he now says he happily calls “home”. His work has been seen in over 100 publications and nearly 20 galleries and museums. He is very proud of his PV High winners and he shared with us the class website with all their photography.
