The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay (COSB) opened its 42nd Season on October 20 with a sensational Pops Concert and Dinner in the ballroom at the beautiful Palos Verdes Golf Club (PVGC). The Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay is an all-professional orchestra and is the resident classical orchestra of the Palos Verdes Performing Arts at the Norris Theater and the only orchestra in the South Bay offering a full season with nationally and internationally recognized soloists. The Pops Concert at the Palos Verdes Golf Club was a new concept for COSB intended to attract a wider audience of music lovers and supporters from our four cities. The Chamber Orchestra led by conductor Maestro Hector Salazar was joined by TV and screen star and local resident, Tom Sullivan, as the featured soloist adding an afternoon of vocal stylings created especially for this Pops Concert. Tom Sullivan’s beautiful Irish tenor voice has delighted audiences for many years, and this performance was Tom’s very personal contribution to celebrating the 100th anniversary of PVGC and his gratitude to PVGC for honoring him with membership! Tom told us that he had not performed locally for several years so he rehearsed over 60 hours for this show and was outstanding in his prepared repertory, but he really brought the house down with his encore of “Danny Boy”!
The informal Pops format was a big hit with the audience and PVGC Chef Garrett Yokoyama presented a wonderful dinner to complement the great music. With the Santa Monica Bay and a beautiful evening sunset in the background, this was a most enjoyable evening and a very successful kick off to the COSB 2024/2025 Season. The next concert is November 17 at 4 pm at the Norris Theater featuring renowned flute soloist, Erin Bouriakov. Tickets are available through the Norris Box Office or the COSB website at www.mycosb.org.
