Winners Of The 2023 PV Magazine “The Historic Peninsula” Photo Contest
This year our theme was “The Historic Peninsula!”
We asked students to send us photos of a significant historical landmark or location found on the Palos Verdes Peninsula with a brief description about the photo.
1st Place: Beacon of the Past
Donny Clark, Peninsula High School, 9th Grade
The subject of this photo is the iconic Pt. Vicente Lighthouse. I know that the Lighthouse is one of the most photographed subjects in Palos Verdes, but shooting it in black and white helped me to connect its history to the present. I like that I also captured the outbuildings, Catalina in the background, and the palm tree stump in the foreground, which reminds me of how the Lighthouse is aging. I work as a Docent at the Interpretive Center and have learned a lot about the history of the Lighthouse and the area where we live. Visitors connect with our past by visiting the Interpretive Center I hope this image inspires locals to visit us this Summer.
2nd Place: Knock, He Is Waiting
Thomas Kouzmanoff, Peninsula High School, 9th Grade
I woke up early one morning to capture the Saint Francis door with the morning light. I thought about this because I have a lot of memories there and I went to Preschool there. I like this shot because surrounding the church is a very peaceful garden and scenery and the door adds to this by creating balance
3rd Place: Abandoned WW2 Missile Shack
Ryan Thymes, Peninsula High School, 10th Grade
Taken at White Point Nature Preserve(formerly White Point Military Reservation). Abandoned in 1978, the Palos Verdes Land Conservancy has allowed some pieces of history to remain untouched.
Honorable Mentions
Botanic Gardens
Connor Lewis, Peninsula High School, 11th Grade
Shallow depth of field in the background with focus on the purple flowers in the foreground. I really like how it adds to the contrast of the photo.
Surf at the Cove
Kenzi McLay, Peninsula High School, 12th Grade
Walking out to go surfing.
The Walk to the Bay
Danielle Flamengo, Peninsula High School, 11th Grade
This photo was taken from the top of the cliffs overlooking Lunada Bay. I took it of a surfer walking down the trail to go surfing.
Terranea Sunrise
Madeline Delana, Peninsula High School, 12th Grade
This photo of Terranea was taken at sunrise. It captures the natural beauty of the cliffs along with the beauty of the architecture.
The waters of Hudson’s Bluff Sea Cave
Tara Hashemy, Peninsula High School, 9th Grade
This photo captures one of the many beautiful aspects of PV. I took this photo at the famous Terranea beach, Hudson’s Bluff Sea Cave / The Lost Boys Lair. I captured the tranquil and calm feeling one may feel when watching the waves, using a slow-shutter shooting technique you can see the motions of the waves. I was inspired to take this photograph since this spot is very special to me and I wanted to portray the feelings I feel when spending time at such a blissful place. Pv is also a very special place where people can experience the amazing tide pools and can get in touch with ocean wildlife.
Congratulations to the winners of our 2023 High School Student Photography Contest!
PV Magazine would like to thank everyone who submitted photos to this year’s contest as well as the photography teachers who supported the contest, James Stiles, Peninsula High School and Kristy Jiminez, Palos Verdes High School.
